Das ist ein ....

hond.jpg

The possibilities of LEGO are endless. Millions of children, architects, artists,
designers and other enthusiasts the world over have developed their talents
through LEGO. Some of the results are on display in Das ist ein Hund, in De
Kabinetten van de Vleeshal. Das ist ein Hund does not distinguish art from
dilettantism. The main aim of the exhibition is to showcase how LEGO
becomes putty in the hands of those it inspires.

DODELIJK!

dgg.jpg

World, get ready for some pure Musical Genius! Here are the DAVID
GILMOUR GIRLS. Two angry young guys (also members of the almost
legendary dutch rock sensation OIL) decided it was time for a new
cosmopolitan attitude, that of the young hard-bodied intellectually
up to date techno - rock - pop - punk - designer - artist - model -
producer - musician - blah, blah... ‘All we need is a name funnier than
anything else’ they must have thought, and they succeeded. Before
they had a sort of non performing band called Beatnik L.I.O.N.S.,
but those guys never had a website. The DGG do, so do yourself
a favor and go there.

Don’t forget to stop by their shop and get yourself an excellent DGG /
‘Alan’ (Vega) shirt / sweater / polo shirt (!) / or the bag displayed above...
HuMobisten and DGG are planning to put out a split 12" record SOON!
(’round june/july 2004 or so...)

Art needs to go places

bezit.jpg

Sophia ‘Come Together’ Benefit, Off_Corso, Rotterdam, September 7th, 2003

‘Kunst moet rollen, een tweeluik’
(int. title: ‘Art needs to go places’, a duo piece)
2 x 30 cm. x 40 cm. / 2003

‘Art needs to go places’ is a piece consisting of both a drawing (Ready Bought
No. 002, originally titled ‘Margot’) made by Dutch female artist Sylvie Overheul
and this certificate (certificaat) which is here to tell you about this being a duo
piece and to congratualate you on the buying of our work. The HuMobisten once
bought ‘Margot’ after they saw it exposed in a Rotterdam bar and decided to
buy it. Now, they’ve made a new piece about the ‘buying and selling of art’
using that drawing. If you loose this certificate you still have an original Sylvie
Overheul drawing.

‘Art needs to go places’ is a piece the HuMobisten have made especially
for the ‘Come Together Auction’, a benefit for the ‘Sophia Kinderziekenhuis’
(Sophia Children’s hospital).

The HuMobisten bought their ‘Margot’ on january 14th, of the year 2002.
They’ve had it in their private collection ever since. It was never borrowed
for an exhibition and it is preserved well.

The HuMobisten paid 170,17 Euros (tax included) for it back then. Our work
(which included Sylvie’s) was auctioned for 190 Euros. Thank you for buying
this piece from us, let’s hope it will do the sick children some good.

Sincerely yours,
HuMobisten

Rotowns’ charming Saskia (Voloptuous and Delicious!) de Feyter asked
me to participate on the ‘Illustrators R Go!’ programme she initiated over
two years ago (or so). How could I refuse? You just don’t say no to a lady
like her... The deal is that EVERYONE INTERESTED can participate in the
making of Rotown posters. Pretty cool, eh!?!? (Sign up online for IRG!)

These guys are the worst guys in the world.

Bart, Max & Jos (AKA De Driedrubbeledrim) turn words upside down,
flip ’em over and create pointy new comedic stuff no one in the world
understands but them and the selected few (amongst whom: me,
naturally). One cannot say anything near these guys without it being
raped by their built in auto-pilot-syntax-izer, which seems to rest not.

hottentottententententoonstelling

hottentot.jpg

Some time ago I co-curated a show at mama (showroom for
media and moving art, Rotterdam) called ‘Hottentottententen-
tentoonstelling’ (november, 2002 - january 2003). They call
it co-curated, but it basically comes down to whispering some
of the right names in some of the right ears. Because of the
shows’ theme ‘putting the craft back into craftsmanship’, we
wanted to make a sort of late fourtees / early fiftees Jenever
picture...
Unfortunately participants Robert Rosenau and Jan van Nuenen
couldn’t make the shoot because of busyness. Present on the
thing we* made anyhow (clockwise from upper left corner:
Hidde van Schie, Vincent van Duin, GeeJee van der Akerboom
and myself wearing the excellent Pipilotti Rist T-Shirt by 75b.
We didn’t know what to do with it, but taking the actual picture
seemed more important than its purpose later. In the back
you can see some of a fantastic ‘jungle’ painting by Hidde.

Turned out to be excellent log-material, eh?

*we didn’t make the picture, Rick Messemaker did. Thanks!

Sofia

sofia.jpg

I went to Sofia last January. Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria. I really liked it
over there. Hopefully I will be there again later this year.
I met this really nice guy over there. His name is Theodor Liho.
Check his website: the eggs design studio.
Also nice organisations from Sofia are InterSpace and The Red House.
More about Sofia soon.

Das ist ein Hund

geensysteem.jpg

I went and stood up out of bed with no 'system' on my mind. I am really
busy now with the exhibition 'Das ist ein Hund'. Das ist ein Hund means ‘that
is a dog’. The show is about the possibilities of LEGO. I will put more stuff
about it on the HuMobisten website the upcoming days. The main aim of
the exhibition is to showcase how LEGO becomes putty in the hands of
those it inspires. For more details go to Das ist ein Hund.

The Real Deal

MLR.JPG

(Text from the official Vogel Visions DVD of HOW MAGIEL LA
RIVIERE DID NOT BECOME KING OF FASHION (dutch title: MLR /
portret van een ongekroonde modekoning) © HuMobisten 2002
Courtesy: Historisch Museum Rotterdam, 2003

Magiel La Rivière, born in the Rotterdam summer of ’69, dedicated
his life to creating his own street style fashion. In the early eighties
Magiel started making clothing in a quite unique style. Influenced by
both his alltime superheroin Coco Chanel and the eclectic fashion of
hip hop icons like Grandmaster Flash and later Erik B & Rakim.
His weird mixture of an upcoming (black) ‘hardcore’ culture, money,
cocaine, jewelry, caviar and limos is heavily embraced in the R&B
culture of the late ninetees and the now, but back then it was still
kind of hard to sell.
Magiel speaks his thoughts on the fashion industry, (bad) luck, taste,
his criminal background, his will to carry on and the friends that have
supported him throughout his life. Success, however, is not for all of
us. After setting up loads of shows by himself Magiel never got ‘picked
up’ by the media or the international fashion world.
As part of a group exhibition on Rotterdam fashion, the HuMobisten
made this short film about their ‘hero’ as a symbol of respect to a d.i.y.
fashion artist who has the bad luck of having a too distinctive taste.

Hopefully, we’ll be able to put some movie clips online soon. As soon
as they are we’ll let you know. In the meantime you have to use your
imagination and the jpeg image above.

The Trampoline

reus.jpg

Most of you have never seen this thing because you don’t live in
Rotterdam. Some of you do live in Rotterdam, but have never had
the tendency to look up after going to the movies at Venster/Lantaarn
(Gouvernestraat, Rotterdam). Again, there are some who do live in
Rotterdam and look up after going to the movies, yet seeing nothing
but a faint image overgrown with plants and stuff...
Here’s Rigardus when he was still ‘bald’. Gyz took this picture after
the infamous Space Invader had left his mark in the down left corner
of the photograph. Under the right circumstances one can see them
smiling at each other... Dude!

The Rotterdam Giant (who actually used to live in the same street, in
the Nighttown offices) and his creators are proud to thank these guys
right here for support and realisation!

Our friend Geert Mul once claimed that it looks like a big trampoline,
attached to the wall... We’ve been calling it that ever since.

Switch!

badtalk.jpg

Participating in a group show is never easy. It’s especially hard when
the idea of the exhibition is ‘work together in the same space for about
a month and be influenced by the other’. My oh my... After no one really
showed up or was even planning to be influenced by someone other but
themselves, I started writing little articles about my colleagues and left
out all politeness. Politeness is often used in the weird world of art(ists)
to be sure of return compliments. Anyway, I put those articles on the
wall and waited for the shit to hit the fan.
Finally some of my co-workers were getting the hang of it and started
actually writing stuff all over my ‘art’. Later, when the exhibition was over,
I came by to pick up my papers only to find out someone had already taken
my work off the wall and claimed to have ‘lost it’. Probably threw it the fuck
away. Ha ha... Funny artists. Initiated by Saminte Ekeland and Rolf den
Dunnen. Other participating artists: Roel Meelkop, Johan Kleinjan, Boris
Pas, Bas Zoontjens and others.

SHAMELESS PLUGGING

echteliefde.jpg

This was the e-invitation we sent our friends and email-listing to let
them know there was a screening in Rotown* (Rotterdam) of our new
short film called Echte Liefde (int. title: True Love / out now on DVD
on the Vogel Visions Label). Anyway, the images are shot on a
graduation party at my old school. I had graduated long before the
film was shot and was there kind of by accident. he he... It was
M.A.Y.H.E.M. people. Life’s great when you’re young and dumb and
that’s just what your friends the HuMobisten wanted to show you in
this particular film. Let us know if you want to order a copy or, if
you are in less a hurry, wait for the HuMobisten Compilation DVD
‘8 Super Films’, which will hopefully be released this year and will
definately hold lots and lots of special features and never-before-
seen-footage, YEAH!!!

and the winner is...

maaskant.jpg

Here's a picture (again taken by the talented mr. Hanswijk) of an exhibition
we made for the Maaskant Award, a prestigious academy award that can be
won once a year by Rotterdam Willem de Kooning post graduates. Gyz —a
certified Rotterdam post graduate— was nominated, so we cycled off to the
academy that was once ‘ours’ and made this exhibition/installation of all the
printed matter we made in two years time. Some with reference to other
stuff we do such as the ‘Knakendisco’, the design for ‘Krakatau’ or all the
stuff we made in the past for the smallest Gallery in Rotterdam, called
De Aanschouw. Guess what, Gyz won the damn thing... Some people
couldn’t believe it. I, on the other hand, would not have believed otherwise.
And you can quote me on that one!

Just say NO! to Franz Ferdinand

onee.jpg

What do you do when an entire town seems to go to a show
you’re not really in the mood for. If you’re lucky your good
friend Niels (DJ Postrock) takes you with him to the quiet
town of Tilburg to rock out to the sound of Oneida (from
Brooklyn, NY). Happened to me last friday, but because of
all the good skateboard movie fun I totally forgot (dude!).
Here’s a picture of them I found online somewhere. Their
most recent album ‘secret wars’ came out on Rough Trade,
holds 8 songs and is A REAL GOOD RECORD. References:
Stoner/Kraut/Minimal/IndieRock/Punkrock/Experimental.
Or, if you’re more into vibes instead of labels: awkward/
restless/angry/melancholic/bitter/insane/ironic.
well, that’s that. It was a fun night.

Tokyo

japan.jpg

When I was in Tokyo (October 2002) the first issue of the magazine
Atmosphere was been released by Gas (an Art & Design publisher).
The HuMobisten had a page in that magazine. The release party was
held in the Gas shop somewhere in Tokyo. Downstairs the shop there
was a little exhibition with work of us among others like experimental
jetset, Jop van Bennekom and many more.
It was accidentally that it came out when I was in Tokyo during my
one month trip in Japan with Geert Mul, Koot and Aki.

The trailerpark of Gyz La Rivière

gyzdvd.jpg

This DVD of my (video)work is just finished and brought to you by
Vogel Visions Inc. Soon I will put some videomaterial online...
Read what my buddy Rufus.K had to say about it:

In the compilation DVD you’re about to see (If you want a copy),
Gyz La Rivière takes you with him into the beautiful, versatile world
of the VHS age on the one side, and on a journey through his carreer
on the other. By doing so, Gyz is showing that one cannot understand
his work without understanding the aestethics of the ‘horizontal screen
line’, the 25-frames-per-sec. rate or the 3:4 aspect ratio he loves so
much. On top of this, he managed to make such an interesting moody
promo that it’s not just good fun to watch it if you’re some kind of
museum curator. It’s also a document hailing the first MTV era and
the early skateboard videos like ‘Public Domain’ or ‘Ban This’.

Over 40 minutes of pure fun, this DVD offers all the highlights of Gyz
videotic experimentation, registrations of performances and installations,
never before seen promo-material of the ‘This is The Flow’ show (with
Spannish comment!), which Gyz made in cooperation with Robert Rosenau
and the Girl Skateboard Co., a look back at the infamous Knakendisco
nights, his first full blown exhibition on the classic video game system,
live VJ sets, some never before seen HuMobisten material, shots of the
legendary INGSOC shop and the list goes on and on and on. Let’s waste
no more time. Go and check out the promo ‘tape’ of a guy totally devoted
to making serious amounts of awesome moments in video history.

Last Sunday we did the ‘Et Cetera’ gig. The Forma Foundation came
up w/ the idea of taking two great bands (in our case: Mono & Feverdream)
and hook ’em up with two great artists (in our case: us). Anyway, we came
up with the idea of allnite playback-party-action...
The pictures above show that we couldn’t have done it without our HuMobitches
(above) (love you, girls) and the playback skills of (in this case) Mono jamming
out to the sound of feverdream (below - on the left in total darkness, ACE!)

oh yeah, the bands have websites as well, find ’em here:

Look no further

monk.jpg

Just when you think you had it figured out, a hell of a jazz
flick is re-issued on DVD!

After hearing MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS
for the billionth time last september, I figured ‘Charlie M. is the
greatest jazz musician that ever lived, period. Some time later,
me and some friends watched my (video) copy of ‘Straight, No
Chaser’ a film portrait of Thelonious ‘Sphere’ Monk. After seeing
it again, I could do nothing but adjust my prior statement...

Packed w/ brilliant Monk one liners, beautifully shot in lucid black
and white colors, nicely put together, co-produced by Dirty Harry
and, ladies and gents, All That Jazz! Monk absolutely was something
else. The percussive way he played the piano nicely displays the
groovy, magic sense of rhythm Thelonious had. The moment you
want to rewind and rewind and eventually buy the DVD for, is the
one where Thelonious and the octet do Europe. After a slow start
(Thelonious refused to supply the band members their music on
paper until’ INSIDE the plain) the band kicked out the Jams in
our lovely continent. The nonet (starring Phil Woods of all people)
perform at a (creative) level I’ve never heard any other group of
people do before or after. Besides this (or maybe because of this)
they embody the spirit of Thelonious’ music as it should be.
Dangerous, upset, loud and razor sharp.

If you live in a complete Thelonious-less world, try and buy (or
of course download) this record.

Needless to say you shouldn’t forget to watch the movie...

will make you laugh more than Adrian Mole did quite some time ago. Don’t you
know that it’s different for girls? Yes, I do... I can’t help but being surprised

and mystery. wow... (Dutch Readers Only)
